Mrs. Missouri Pageant

Monday March 30, 2009

I had the pleasure of going down to Brandon, MO this weekend to watch the 2009 Mrs. Missouri beauty pageant. We have a friend who competes in the circuit and thought it would be nice to show our support.

The actual event wasn't until Saturday evening but we headed down to Branson at 8:30 a.m. because all of the weather people were saying the SNOW STORM OF THE CENTURY was headed our way and we didn't want to get caught on the highway in crappy weather. Once we got there, we spent most of the afternoon at various restaurants eating lunch, snacking, and drinking beer. We watched the Missouri game at an "Irish pub" called Waxy O'shea's; a smallish establishment that only had one server for the entire restaurant. He did an okay job until the place got fairly busy... then he just lost it. Sorry, man, I know you're busy but it's not my problem and/or fault.

The pageant... You know that TV show on TLC "Toddlers & Tiaras"? That's pretty much what this pageant was. Even though the main show was the Mrs. Missouri competition, there was a "sub show" about the Miss Missouri Princess competition, with 6 different age ranges (4/5 through 18/19). The whole thing was pretty awful since clearly none of the girls had much pageant "training," so their interview answers were generally bad and they just looked awkward on the stage. I'm not saying I could do better, but I think the notion of parading a little girl around on stage to be judged is a little sick. Just watch "Drop Dead Gorgeous" and you'll get what I'm saying.

The Mrs. Missouri competition was just as bad. Our friend did great, she actually answered her interview question AND her answer made sense... unlike the other 4 women who made it in to the final 5. Our friend finished 2nd for the 2nd year in a row which is disappointing because (at least I think) she did the best job in the show. We did notice that all of the other women have kids and our friend doesn't, something we think may have hurt her in the competition.

Basically, I just had a weird weekend. Branson is weird, beauty pageants are weird...
